Sample: Writing the first paragraph of a breaking story

In a breaking report the first paragraph does most of the work. A reader who stops after one sentence should still know what happened.

Three things the opening should answer

  • What happened, in plain words.
  • Where and when it happened.
  • Why it matters to your readers.

Everything after that can add detail, context and voices. Keep sentences short and leave out anything you have not confirmed.
